EA Solent Lunch Friday 19th April at Chewton Glen with Rich Riley

April 7, 2024

Rich Riley, the Executive Association Solent’s guest speaker for Friday 19th April joins us almost 11 years to the date when his life was changed forever. In a catastrophic road traffic collision on the A337 whilst treating a patient in the back of an ambulance. The accident, in which sadly his crew mate and patient were killed, resulted in Rich suffering multiple physical injuries including a broken back and neck and a traumatic brain injury – which still impacts his life 11 years later.

Whilst his life-changing injuries ended his much-loved career in the Ambulance service, he was determined that his life would not be one of just sitting and watching the world go by. Less than two years after his accident Rich climbed Kilimanjaro to raise funds for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance who he credits with saving his life.

In the years that have followed Rich has been on many more adventures including adventure biking through France, exploring the Canadian Rockies and West Coast, sleeping in a snow hole when trekking in the Pyrenees, road-tripping southern Iceland, paragliding at Dome du Puy and leading a group of hikers up Mount Toubkal in Morocco, among other adventures. unfortunately due to his brain injury induced memory loss he only remembers snapshots of his adventures, and uses photographs and videos to look back at his trips. He likens his memory loss to having a pint glass and trying to pour two pints of water in, with no control over what he remembers…
